Beaches

Magnificent beaches are found along the coasts of Rethymno Greece, both on the northern and the southern side of the prefecture.

Rethymno beaches on the northern side are more organized and popular, lined up with hotels, restaurants, cafeterias and water sports centers. Most Rethymno beaches on the southern side remain untouched by tourism and ideal for total privacy. A drive around will bring you to fabulous places to relax. You will find below a list of the best beaches in Rethymno Crete.

Agia Galini

The main beach of Agia Galini is located about 55 km south of Rethymno town, it is well-organized with sunbeds and umbrellas and has nice crystalline waters. The beach offers all kind of beach facilities and a wide range of water sports. On the east end of the beach, visitors will be able to find quieter spots for swim and a small river ending into the sea. There one can enjoy a fresh bath under the shadow of the impressive cliffs. Other wonderful clean beaches with pristine waters can be found after the long sandy beach of Agia Galini, in various picturesque inlets. In the village, visitors will find everything needed in terms of accommodations and entertainment.

Bali

Bali is a picturesque coastal village nestled in the mountains around the natural bay and 32 km east of Rethymno Town. Small inlets are scattered on the coast in front of the village where visitors can swim in the crystalline waters and enjoy the peaceful atmosphere and the nice facilities. In the village and the surrounding area plenty of taverns, cafes and accommodations are available.

Preveli

The beach of Preveli is situated 40 km south of the main town and is the most idyllic beach in Rethymno. Preveli reminds of an exotic lagoon. It is an oasis of palm trees with crystalline greenish waters and fine soft sand. Kourtaliotis River ends at this wonderful beach, creating a delta. Apart from the superb palm trees, lush vegetation surrounds the beach and the river, creating a dreamy landscape. Because of its extreme beauty, the Preveli Beach unfortunately gets very crowded during high season. This wonderful place can be reached by foot from the parking nearby the Preveli Monastery or by fishing boats which leave regularly from Plakias and Agia Galini.

Triopetra

Triopetra (=three stones) beach owes its name to the three imposing rocks found in its waters. It is located 52 km south of Rethymno town and 13 km north of Akoumia village. The beach of Triopetra is long and sandy. Due to its geographical position, it is frequently affected by southern winds. However, it remains popular due to its crystal waters. There are some accommodation options close to this beach and nice taverns with excellent seafood. Triopetra beach is mostly famous for the wide range of water sports and for its lovely sunset that creates beautiful colors in the sky. To go to Triopetra beach, you have to go to Akoumia village and then take a difficult track. When you are about to reach the beach, you have to continue on foot for about 5 minutes.
